Itinerary
- The Huayllay Stone Forest Tour starts with the pick up of the tourist from the Main Square of the city of Huanuco at 6:00 am.
- On board of a tourist transport (group service) a road trip of approximately 150 kilometers is made. On the route the visitor will pass from a tropical valley geography to a region of high mountains belonging to the department of Pasco. The trip takes 3 hours and 30 minutes on average. However, stops are made along the route to enjoy the beautiful scenery and to buy water, snacks or fruit.
- The first stop is at the Pasco junction, a very important area on the western side of the Andes Mountains as it separates some of Peru’s most important rivers: the Huallaga River, the Mantaro River, the Huaura River and the Paucartambo River, whose waters divide through the mountain ranges at this point in the Pasco region.
- A stop will also be made at the pampa de Junin, a flat and elevated area on one of the edges of Lake Junin (on the border of the departments of Junin and Pasco). There, the visitor will be able to take beautiful pictures before continuing on to the high mountains of the Huayllay National Sanctuary.
- Once in the Huayllay National Sanctuary (4,310 meters above sea level), visitors can take an entertaining hike along one of its circuits. These lead to the volcanic stone formations carved by nature itself more than 7 million years ago (a product of erosion). The site covers an area of 6 thousand hectares where about 4 thousand rock formations have been recorded.
- The visitor will follow one of the circuits, always accompanied by a professional tour guide who will help him to understand the cosmovision of the first settlers of the area. In the stone forest of Huayllay, cave paintings and small archaeological sites of more than two thousand years old have also been recorded. Some of the most famous rock formations are: the elephant, the alpaca, the cobra, the dog, the turtle, the snail, the zebra, the penguin, the condor or the profiles of human beings such as the thinking man or the walking man. Of course, in each rock formation the visitor will be able to get beautiful pictures of his adventure.
- After touring the Huayllay National Sanctuary in Huanuco, the visitor will have the opportunity to relax in one of the thermal medicinal baths of the site. For this, it is necessary to bring bathing clothes and a towel. The volcanic waters of the place have properties to alleviate muscular and rheumatic pains. This is an excellent opportunity to relax surrounded by a very special mountain landscape.
