What is the Colca?

Colca is one of the deepest canyons on the planet (its interior reaches 4,160 meters). It is located within the department of Arequipa, in the Andes Mountains of southern Peru.

Colca is the second most visited tourist attraction in all of Peru. First is Machu Picchu, one of the 7 wonders of the modern world . The reason for its fame is due to its fabulous landscapes.

Throughout the Colca canyon there are several viewpoints from which to appreciate the scenic beauty of the place. The viewpoint of the condor is undoubtedly the most famous of all. From there you can enjoy the flight of several Andean condors.

On the trip to Colca you can also visit different Andean towns full of culture. You can also go hiking. Another option is to relax in its thermal baths.

How to visit it?

There are two ways to visit the Colca Canyon: with an all-inclusive tour or on your own.

Tours to the Colca Canyon can be purchased at the Arequipa tourism agencies. Also on their web pages. There are services of 1 or 2 days. These include: complete transportation, entrance to the Colca, tourist guide service and lodging (in the case of the 2 day and 1 night tours). Some services include food. The cost of the 1-day tours is approximately $ 35.

To go on their own, the tourist must purchase these services separately: transportation to the town of Chivay (or to Cabanaconde), the Colca Tourist Ticket, the tour guide service (optional) and food at a local restaurant.

The Colca Tourist Ticket allows you to visit all the viewpoints of the canyon as well as the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve, a place full of mountainous landscapes of great scenic beauty.

To access the ticket and its discounts it is necessary to present the passport or identity document during the purchase.

The ticket must be used the same day of purchase. This is done in the same Colca canyon. It is valid for a single day.

The ticket can only be used once.

Peruvian tourists who access the ‘student’ discount must present their current university card at the time of purchase.

Tourists who access the ‘special prices’ must register their entry at the ‘Interpretation Center’ in the town of Chivay.

Only some tourists can access the Colca canyon for free. These are:

  • Children from 0 to 5 years old.
  • Firefighters of Peruvian nationality.
  • Police officers on duty.
  • Peruvian travel agents.
  • Persons with disabilities of Peruvian nationality.
  • People who were born in the ‘Jurisdiction of Auto Colca’.
  • People with current address in the ‘Jurisdiction of Auto Colca’.
  • Tourist guides authorized to work in the Colca Canyon circuit and the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve.

To access the free entrance to Colca, these people must present the necessary documents that validate said promotion.


Some tips

The climate in the Colca canyon is cold. For this reason, it is advisable to wear warm clothing, especially if you are spending the night. The temperature varies from a maximum of 24ºC. in the day to a minimum of -5ºC. at night.

During the visit to Colca do not miss the opportunity to relax in the thermal baths of the place. These are: the thermal baths of La Calera (in the town of Chivay), the thermal baths of Chacapi (in the town of Yanque), the thermal baths of the Inca (in the town of Callalli) or the thermal baths of Coñeymayo (in the town of Caylloma).


More information about the Colca Canyon

The ‘Jurisdiction of Auto Colca’ covers all the districts of the Arequipa province of Caylloma. Likewise, it also includes the districts of Cayma, San Juan de Tarucani, Yura, Yanahuara, Andagua, Chachas and Ayo. Also the town of Ubinas (in the Moqueguana province of Sánchez Cerro).

To travel from the city of Arequipa to the Colca canyon, you must take public transport at the land terminal of the ‘White City’. The trip to Chivay takes approximately 4 hours. The service costs approximately 25 Peruvian soles. In this town there are most of the tourist lodgings of the place.
