Where is the 7 Colors Mountain?

The Vinicunca or Mountain of the 7 Colors is an Andean mountain located south of Cusco in the mountainous foothills of the snowy Ausangate. From Cusco it is about 100 kilometers by paved road and trail. The last section of approximately 5 kilometers is done on foot (or on horseback optionally). The most striking thing is that its puna geography is 5,200 meters above sea level. Due to this, its visit is a challenge for all tourists.

Itinerary

  • The tour begins with the pick up of each one of the tourists at the door of their hotel in the city of Cusco. The pick up is between 4.30 am and 5 am.
  • Once the group is gathered in the spacious minivan, we will head south to the town of Cusipata (almost 2 hours of travel). Once there, we will descend to have breakfast at a local tourist restaurant.
  • Breakfast is buffet style and prepared with delicious local ingredients. Includes Cusco breads, coffee, jams, yogurt, cereals, fruits, juices, scrambled eggs and more.
  • After breakfast we will board the tourist transport to continue our trip to the 7 Colores Mountain. Before, in a parking lot, we will have to pay the entrance ticket to Vinicunca (15 PEN approximately)..
  • After 1 hour of travel we will arrive at the Phulawasipata camp, at an average altitude of 4,900 meters. There we will get ready to make the trek to Vinicunca. Tourists who wish can contract the horseback transportation service with one of the available local residents (payment of approximately 90 PEN round trip). This service is optional so it is not included in the tour.
  • The walk to Vinicunca is 5 kilometers on average. It takes between 1 to 2 hours depending on the physical condition of the tourist. The route is almost always on flat roads. However, the last part is up a steep hill difficult for visitors. The route is simple, but it is somewhat complicated by the altitude above 5,000 meters of elevation.
  • Once at the top of Vinicunca, the tourist will be able to appreciate a wonderful landscape. There are up to three viewpoints where you can get the dream photo. The tour guide will accompany you here and throughout the entire adventure. On average, the tourist can stay on the mountain for up to 1 hour or more.
  • When the tour guide deems it convenient, it is time to return. The way back is easier than the one going because it is mostly downhill. It takes between 1 to 1 hour 30 minutes to reach the Phulawasipata camp again.
  • In Phulawasipata we will board the tourist transport to return to the town of Cusipata (1 hour trip) where we will descend to enjoy a delicious buffet-style lunch.
  • Lunch includes hot soups, salads, white rice, stews, meats (alpaca, steak, chicken), beans, wontons, guacamole, fruits, hot drinks and more. Does not include cold or alcoholic drinks.
