In high tourist season (April to August), it is best to reserve hotel rooms online. If you hope to get to Aguas Calientes, you may not get the service you are looking for.

Aguas Calientes is the closest town to Machu Picchu (only 10 kilometers away) but it is not the only one. Other options are Ollantaytambo (30 kilometers) or Santa Teresa (20 kilometers). In both places there are also good lodging options.
