Altitude sickness is a natural discomfort suffered by visitors who come to Cusco, a mountain geography where oxygen has low pressure. To lessen your symptoms (nausea, headache, fatigue) you can drink plenty of water, avoid alcoholic beverages and fatty foods. Within a few days, the symptoms will go away on their own.
The Salkantay Trek is one of the most difficult routes. It is a 5-day and 4-night walk to Machu Picchu through high mountains near the snowy Salkantay as well as tropical landscapes that end in the Inca city of Machu Picchu.
The Huchuy Qosqo trek is one of the simplest hiking routes. It includes a walk of only 17 kilometers that includes the visit of the archaeological site of Huchuy Qosqo and ends in the Inca city of Machu Picchu. It is an ideal route to do with children.
Although it is not the most recommended, it is possible to do some hiking trails without a tour. For example, the visitor can do the Salkantay Trek, the Lares Trek, the Huchuy Qosqo Trek on their own. The only hiking route that cannot be done without a tour is the 4-day Classic Inca Trail.
